We understand that sometimes life’s challenges can make it difficult to afford the care you deserve. Because we don’t want financial barriers to stand in the way of your progress, a limited number of scholarships are available for clients experiencing genuine financial hardship.
If you are committed to taking steps toward healing but are truly unable to afford our standard rates, we invite you to complete a short application for consideration. Each request is reviewed carefully and handled with confidentiality and care.
Pain Management Coaching is an education and support-based approach that helps individuals with chronic pain better understand their condition and develop self-management strategies. We can help you shift your perspective from a purely medical model to a BioPsychoSocial (whole person) one. Coaches use techniques like sharing pain science principles, a collaborative client-centered stance (we listen and believe you), and motivational interviewing to empower patients, improve their coping skills, and foster lifestyle changes to enhance their quality of life and independence in managing pain.
Some would say that counseling/therapy and coaching are distinctly different ways of getting help. We say the difference between Counseling and Coaching might be less distinctly different and more of a “continuum” of care: Counseling (or therapy) on one end, Coaching on the other, all designed to help you manage your pain and relationships more effectively.
Since coaching tends to focus more on addressing current challenges, building on strengths, and strategizing to accomplish future goals & vision — and Pain in the Rear View coaches are trained to excel at this mission — we can help you with your pain challenges, assist you in rallying your inner strengths, and support you as own and coordinate your medical care.
Counseling tends to focus more on healing from past wounds, helping with diagnosable mental illnesses, and/or resolving challenging relationship dynamics between spouses or family members. Our licensed Marriage and Family Therapists can help you and your family accomplish any of those tasks, bringing the training, experience, and license to delve into whatever relational or behavioral health challenges that you and your family (or partner) need help with.
As a interdisciplinary team — Nationally Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaches, Certified Pain Management Coaches, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, we offer coaching as well as counseling services to 1) those who are struggling with pain and want to better manage those challenges and 2) family members who are struggling with loved one’s pain challenges.
We know pain intimately. After founder Debbie struggled with unmanaged chronic pain for 20+ years, with her husband Jim by her side every step of the way, Debbie discovered evidence-based whole person care for pain that was transformative. After experiencing how powerful and life-changing it was, we both trained at Pain Coach Academy to learn the best strategies for supporting others in pain and help them take back their lives.
Although our team is made up of a team of pain specialists (lived-experience with pain, health coaching training for pain management, and many hours of in-session experience changing lives of pain strugglers), typically a doctor’s referral to a “Pain Specialist” is to a fellow medical doctor who specializes in the treatment of pain (injections, medications, and sometimes surgeries).
We believe in the role of these pain specialist doctors, but recommend that you also partner with our team — to help you 1) learn about the biopsychosocial nature of pain (pain is never just a physical experience), 2) identify thoughts, feelings, habits that may be exacerbating your pain experiences, 3) strategize to optimize your relationship with your medical providers (including any Pain Specialist medical doctors that you visit with).
We are able to file in-network insurance for our counseling services with our Medical Family Therapist James D “Jim” Murphy, LMFT (or work with our Coach/Counselor team) with certain insurance companies. Visit this link to verify coverage: https://care.headway.co/providers/james-murphy (Blue Cross/Blue Shield Medicare Advantage can also be filed.)
For out-of-network sessions (counseling with non-supported health insurance plans or for coaching), see our pricing page. We can print regular “Super Bills” for those sessions that you can submit to your health insurance plan.
Pain management coaching can serve anyone anywhere through our telehealth services. Counseling, however, is limited to the state of Texas because of the current licensing requirements of our clinicians.
Please see our pricing page for more information on the costs of our services.
