Adding to Your Toolbox (making a list of pain relief tools)

In one of our recent pain support groups, we explored ways to add additional “tools” to our “toolbox” — activities that help us manage our pain and live more fulfilling lives.

As you likely know, it can be difficult to think of the various pain management tools in the midst of a pain episode. It’s helpful to make a reminder list of creative options.

In our group discussion, we concluded that making a list 1) reminds us that we DO have options 2) gives us a sense of power and control 3) allows us to make a choice between focusing on what we can do rather than on the pain or our sense of helplessness.

Here are categories we discussed and some of the ideas shared:

Activities that Provide Comfort and Calm

  • Play inspirational music or listen to hymns
  • Drink sparkling water
  • Take a hot shower or bath (with scents, especially lavender)
  • Use aromatherapy candles
  • Drink hot tea
  • Read a good book
  • Go for a walk
  • Spend time outdoors
  • Interact with pets

Activities that Distract the Brain from Pain

  • Play a game
  • Watch TV, movie or other videos
  • Read a good book
  • Listen to a podcast

Activities that Change Our Focus — to others

  • Make a phone call
  • Send encouraging text or scripture
  • Pray for others

Here are additional categories to brainstorm additional ideas for pain relief tools:

  • Activities that Bring me Pleasure
  • Activities that Help me Focus on the Positive
  • Supportive People to Call or Text

It was also suggested that we expand these lists with our own ideas by recording them on our smart phones using iPhone Notes or the Google “Keep” app.
